The Eco-Schools programme is an internationally recognised, accredited programme which provides schools with ample opportunities to gather evidence in support of the Journey to Excellence (HMIe 2007), HGIoS 2007 quality indicators, Child at the Centre indicators, Health Promoting Schools accreditation and supports National Priority 4.
The Eco-Schools programme comprises seven elements.
These seven elements are designed to provide a logical and solid foundation for the implementation of a school's environmental management system, and they form the basis of the Eco-Schools award criteria. Click on each box to find out more. |

Currently, Scottish schools can choose from a menu of ten topics when implementing their
Eco-Schools work: Litter, Waste Minimisation, Water, Energy, Biodiversity, Health and Well-Being, School Grounds, Transport, Sustaining Our World , Food and the Environment
Please note,
however, that
the
Litter topic is mandatory. Eco-Schools award applicants will be expected to have a system in place
to ensure
they meet this
requirement and can be denied
their
Green Flag if
they fail to
comply. All Local Authorities have
an obligation under
the
Environmental Protection Act 1990 to keep school grounds free of litter,
so far as practicable.
Secondary schools
have further options open to them – click here for more details
