Based on the UK’s four shared priorities for sustainable development
The core ‘school’ environmental review (left column) must be undertaken formally by secondary schools on an annual basis as an integral part of the Eco-Schools programme. In addition, to take the programme ‘beyond the school gates’ and involve the wider community, shorter ‘home’ and ‘community’ questions are suggested. These latter can be tackled in different ways – e.g. the ‘home’ questions can be issued to the whole school as an ‘ecological footprint’ exercise and returns collated and evaluated by the Eco Committee; the ‘community’ questions might be presented to officers of the Local Authority both to elicit answers, but also to alert them to the school’s interest in sustainable development issues. Repeats of these three questionnaires at annual intervals will allow evaluation of the impact of the school’s efforts at all three levels.
