THE ECO SECONDARY SCHOOL – EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
THREE STEPS TO SUCCESS

1.  ESTABLISH THE SEVEN ELEMENTS OF THE ECO-SCHOOLS PROGRAMME
1. Establish an Eco Committee
2
. Conduct an Environmental Review
3. Draw up an Action Plan
4. Draw up an Eco Code (mission statement)
5. Establish/develop links to the Curriculum
6. Undertake Monitoring and Evaluation of progress
7. Involve the Whole School and Wider Community

2.  TAKE ACTION FOR SUSTAINABILITY
Undertake a range of activities to support the UK’s four shared priorities for Sustainable Development and the ‘Greener Scotland’ strategic objective.

1.  Sustainable Consumption and Production
(tackling over consumption and the throwaway society)eg moving towards Zero Waste, recycling, waste management/reduction, management of resources – fishing, forestry, farming, mineral extraction, water resources, reducing food packaging and food waste

2.  Climate Change and Energy
(reducing emissions) eg transport, alternative energy, alternative fuels, effects of climate change, energy conservation, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

3. Natural Resource Protection and Environmental Enhancement
(our relationship with the natural world) eg biodiversity, species loss, school grounds enhancement, local beauty spots, international campaigns, environmental volunteering.

4.  Sustainable Communities
(living, vibrant and healthy communities need healthy places) eg litter prevention, community volunteering, anti-sectarianism,  health promotion, environmental justice, regeneration, ‘green jobs’, zero carbon buildings, national identity within cultural diversity

3.  PROVIDE EVIDENCE TO SUPPORT ACCREDITATION AS AN ECO - SCHOOL
Working within the framework of the Seven Elements of Eco-Schools Scotland, secondary schools can offer evidence of their commitment to Sustainable Development Education (and progress towards Green Flag status) through:

1.  A willingness to allow pupils to explore a wide range of Sustainable Development topics relating to the UK’s four priorities for sustainable development above
2.  Providing opportunities for young people to gain accreditation for their work in SDE and other voluntary activities
3.  Offering pupils an insight into careers and further education opportunities within the ‘green jobs’ sectors of the Scottish economy
4.  A detailed audit of the current curriculum highlighting elements of SDE already delivered in classrooms – especially cross-departmental initiatives
