At Portobello High School, the monitoring of activities is ongoing and linked to the Action Plan. The school has an established process of reporting on progress with targets within the school’s development plan, so monitoring of Eco-Schools activity is integrated into the normal procedures of the school – for example, bags of recycled paper are counted before collection from the school, litter monitoring is carried out by pupils, and the take up of car- free methods of getting to school is observed. Evaluation is carried out by including activities for discussion on senior Pupil Council agendas and a research questionnaire has been devised to gain insight into the impact that Eco-Schools action has had on the school community.
Monitoring and evaluation of eco activities is an area that schools sometimes find tricky, but Wellwood Primary School have shown just how easy it can be. The school monitors and evaluates every aspect of its eco work, and practically all of this is done by the pupils. Pupils draw up rotas for the monitoring of key areas for action, such as litter, waste paper collection, or bird feeder filling. Any data resulting from these is collated by the pupils involved and the rota system ensures that every pupil has the chance to take part. Results are displayed on graphs and charts throughout the school. The information they have collected has been used to work out the impact of their eco work, e.g. how many trees has the school saved through careful use of paper, what the most popular bird visiting the school garden is, and how many kilograms/tonnes of rubbish are being diverted from landfill.
