Health and Well-being

The Schools (Health Promotion and Nutrition) (Scotland) Act 2007 commenced in January 2008 and places a duty on Local Authorities to ensure that all of their schools are health promoting environments.   Work on becoming a Health Promoting School can be used as evidence in a school’s application for Green Flag status.

Schools have a crucial role to play in promoting the health of young people and shaping the attitudes and behaviours that affect it. Good health at an early age does not only help to avoid future health problems such as obesity and heart disease; it can also improve pupils’ ability to learn. This section looks at some of the many health factors – mental as well as physical – that influence the ability of pupils to fulfil their potential.
